Fowl cholera is a contagious bacterial disease of domesticated and wild avian species caused by infection with Pasteurella multocida. It typically occurs as a fulminating disease with massive bacteraemia and high morbidity and mortality in older birds. Chronic infections

of birds and is distributed world-wide. Fowl cholera outbreaks often manifest as acute fatal septicaemia, primarily in adult birds. Chronic and asymptomatic infections also occur. Diagnosis depends on isolation and identification of the causative bacterium, Pasteurella multocida. Presumptive diagnosis may be based on the occurrence of typical signs and lesions and/or on the microscopic demonstration of myriad bacteria in blood smears, or impression smears of tissues such as liver or spleen. Mild or chronic forms of the disease also occur where the disease is endemic, with localised infection primarily of the respiratory and skeletal systems.

Fowl cholera, also called as avian cholera or avian pasteurellosis, is a contagious and economically important disease of poultry particularly chicken, turkeys, ducks and geese (Rimler and Glisson, 1997). It is caused by Pasteurella multocida,a small gram-negative bacteria, which inhabits the upper respiratory tract of the many avian species as commensal (Rimler and Glisson, 1997). It has been ...
متن کاملPolymerase chain reaction typing of Pasteurella multocida capsules isolated in Iran
Capsules from a range of pathogenic bacteria are the key determinants of virulency. The capsule hasbeen implicated in virulence of Pasteurella multocida. In this study a type-specific polymerase chain reaction(PCR) assay was used for capsular typing of 39 avian P. multocida isolates from Iran. The PCR amplified afragment of 1044 bp from all of tested isolates. It was found that all avian P. mul...
متن کاملEvaluation of immunogenicity and protective efficacy of recombinant ptfA of avian Pasteurella multocida
Avian Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of fowl cholera, a disease much affecting the poultry industry. In order to study the efficacy of the recombinant subunit vaccine constructed with ptfA gene of avian P. multocida, the ptfA gene fragment amplified by PCR from avian P. multocida was cloned into the prokaryotic expression vector pET32a and the recombinant plasmid pET32a-ptfA was o...

Pasteurella multocida is known as an important heterogenic bacterial agent causes some severe diseases such as fowl cholera in poultry and haemorrhagic septicaemia in cattle and buffalo. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed using primers derived from conserved part of 16S-23S rRNA gene. The PCR amplified a fragment size of 0.7 kb using DNA from nine avian P. multocida isolates...
متن کاملFowl cholera.
Pasteurella multocida subspecies multocida is the most common cause of fowl cholera, although P. multocida subspecies septica and gallicida may also cause fowl cholera-like disease to some extent. However, the virulence properties of the different subspecies for various hosts have not been elucidated. The severity and incidence of P. multocida infections may vary considerably depending on sever...
